Welcome to Tough Table Light Episode One! We’re kicking things off with a new format, featuring our guest Lee Kemp from the UKDFBA. Lee, who often joins my ventures, is here to discuss classic physique and natural bodybuilding, as well as hybrid class athletes.

Lee, tell us a bit about yourself and your organization.

Lee explains that he is the founder and president of the UKDFBA, a governing body for drug-free bodybuilding in the UK, which has grown significantly over the past decade. The organization is run on a volunteer basis, focusing on sponsoring athletes to compete internationally.

On the topic of classic physique in natural bodybuilding, Lee shares that he initially saw no need for it, believing the natural bodybuilding gap between open-class competitors and those who can’t get that big is not as wide. However, the introduction of height classes in the INBA has made him reconsider. Classic physique could cater to athletes who fall between men’s physique and bodybuilding, offering a middle ground.

As for crossovers, we both see value in allowing competitors to try different classes, especially at the amateur level. It helps athletes find where they belong and can prevent them from wasting time and resources competing in the wrong division.

The conversation touches on the importance of fair judging and how some athletes, due to misclassification, might not perform as expected. We agree that effective communication and guidance are crucial for helping athletes find the right category.

We also discuss the challenges of pro cards and the need for a more sensible approach to awarding them. Turning pro should be based on an athlete’s readiness for the pro level, not just winning a class with enough participants.

Finally, Lee highlights his involvement in the upcoming Cyber Clash Nationals (CCN2) and encourages athletes to participate in future events, noting the positive experiences of UK athletes in previous competitions.
